Hire a guide for a beer festival experience
Everest climbers have their Sherpas, and fishing boats have their captains. So why wouldn’t beer adventurers have their own guides?
The Michigan Brewers Guild Summer Beer Festival in Ypsilanti will offer this service to beer lovers who may be overwhelmed by the different breweries, beers and styles offered.
The Beer Adventurer Guides will be volunteers, who will get into the festival free and share their knowledge of Michigan breweries, beers and beer styles with those who sign up for the service.
You and a group of up to four other members will arrive at the festival, come in the VIP entrance and meet with your Adventurer Guide. After discussing which beers, styles or breweries you’d like to sample, you’ll assemble a “battle plan” for the group and go forth.
Your group will then take their sampling cups, hit the tastings you’ve decided on, and then come back together in about an hour to discuss what you’ve found.
The Beer Adventurer tour costs another $10 on top of the festival ticket, but it sounds like it would be well worth it for the craft beer novice or an aficionado who might be unfamiliar with the festival’s offerings.
The Michigan Brewers Guild Summer Beer Festival will be Friday, July 23, and Saturday, July 24. The Beer Adventurer experience will be available Saturday only. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at gate, if available, for Friday and
$35 in advance or $40 at gate, if available, for Saturday. For more information, click here.

It never hit me that just like wine tour guides there should be beer tour guides…and I have no clue why.
This makes so much sense!
Not only does it make sense, but it could SO make the trip for someone or a group. I know this is going off a bit in another direction from your post as you were directly trying to relate it to the beer festival in Michigan here soon, but now it has me thinking….
Just think beer guides all over the country helping make “Beercations” happen, and make them great….
Thanks for getting my mind racing yet again Gerard!
Ilya
My mind was going the same way, Ilya. This is a great idea for festivals, and I hope it spreads.
@Gerard,
I’m thinking even further along the lines of actually having local tour guides in a central place all over the country. You go to Austin, you love beer, and you pick a beer tour guide to show you the beer culture and breweries out there and so on.
THE dream job?
Ilya
Where do I apply?
The Peach Festival in Romeo, Michigan has a regular beer tent AND a beers around the world offshoot. Labor Day weekend – mark your calendars! I’m not sure if they would actually have qualified “guides” for your beer travels but I’m sure you would get volunteers!
